[MOBILITY](/blog?category=mobility)

Many of us have heard the phrase, “form before function.” But when it comes to working out and being active, the opposite also holds true. When exercising, it can be valuable to prioritize function over form. This means that instead of focusing on how a certain exercise looks, we can focus on how our body is performing the exercise and what benefits the exercise can bring to our overall health. Let’s take a look at why functional exercises are so important!

The Benefits of Functional Exercise

Functional exercises are beneficial for a few reasons. First, they help strengthen your muscles in ways that mimic real-world movements, making everyday activities easier and less tiring. Second, because functional exercises focus on making sure you learn proper technique first when executing them as they can reduce the risk of injury. Third, because these types of exercises use multiple muscle groups at the same time, they can be more efficient than traditional strength training methods like weight lifting. Finally, because functional exercises emphasize quality over quantity (i.e., doing fewer reps correctly rather than doing more reps incorrectly), they can be safer and more effective than other types of workouts.

Adapting Your Workouts

Not everyone has access to a gym or a licensed professional who can teach them how to properly execute functional exercises. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources available online that can provide guidance on how to do these types of exercises correctly without any additional equipment. My self paced virtual program allows you to learn all of my tips and tricks on movement training so you can build momentum. Additionally, if you suffer from chronic pain or have an injury that limits your range of motion or ability to move freely, there are modified versions of these exercises that you can do from home with minimal risk of exacerbating any existing medical condition you may have.

By understanding why it’s important to prioritize function over form when exercising and adapting your workouts accordingly—whether you’re in a gym setting or at home—you can ensure that your body is getting all the benefits it needs without risking any potential injury.
